Science

Science is an intellectual and practical activity encompassing the systematic study of the structure and behaviour of the physical and natural world through observation and experimentation. The separate sciences have proven to be very successful with attainment increasing each year.

Career opportunities from studying Science:

  • Doctor
  • Forensic Scientist
  • Veterinarian

Key Stage 3 (Yr. 7, 8 & 9)

In Year 7 and 8 - students will learn and embed practical skills in all aspects of science; Chemistry, Biology and Physics. They will develop their knowledge and conceptual understanding through exploring scientific ideas and carrying out investigations. By the end of Key Stage 3 pupils will have developed an understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science that will help students answer scientific questions about the world around them.

In Year 9 - students will start preparing for GCSE, they will be studying the exciting new Edexcel course. Skills in scientific enquiry, literacy and mathematics are delivered to ensure pupils excel in these areas. Students have the opportunity to develop a greater understanding of the application of science through a series of practical investigations.

Key Stage 4 (Yr. 10 & 11)

In Year 10 and 11 - students will study Edexcel 9-1 Science. The majority of students will achieve GCSE Combined Science, this gives students a balance of Chemistry, Biology and Physics as well as embedding practical skills through core practical investigations. Our most-abled students who intend to take science at A Level are given the option to follow the triple science course; this allows them to achieve 3 individual qualifications in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. The course challenges pupils and will fully prepare them for A Level study.

School Resources

The school has 6 fully equipped laboratories and is well resourced. With the introduction of both A Level Biology and Chemistry we are continually updating and increasing the practical apparatus and resources that are available to meet the needs of our students.

Students are encouraged to become engaged with extracurricular opportunities including STEM events and CREST awards.
