For most, entering a new school can be a scary and/or exciting experience. From being at the top of the school, to the bottom; from knowing where everything is, to not knowing how to get around the school, it is understandable why it can be intimidating to start Year 7.
Victoria Bogdanova described her experience as being “scary as [she] didn’t know nearly anyone in the school,” but on a positive side, said, “The teachers are very helpful and they would help you if you need to go somewhere or if you’re lost in the school, as well as all the children. Then I felt calmer because I knew I wouldn’t be alone.”
Taking a different view to entering the new school, Callum Turner said he was “quite excited” even though he thought it was “scary”. He also told me he “got used to [the school day] on the first day,” from having all of the lessons in a single room, to moving around the school every lesson.
One of the main differences the students described is having to go to different classrooms for different subjects. Rather than sitting in the same space, in the same room, for the entire day, they had to learn to quickly move between lessons, which can be daunting when you don’t know where anything is. At first, as the school is much larger than that of their primary, they found it hard to find their way around, but once they got to know it, it was much easier.
The two students also stated within their first month at the new school, they really enjoyed their science lessons here, as it can be much more interesting. Callum said, “Science in primary, we would probably do a little bit of the subject or something, like trying to make a boat float. But here, we’re doing actual experiments with chemicals and fire.” They also said that it can be quite daunting as they have to be more careful with what they’re using. Although they both enjoy science, it is not their favourite subject, but there is no doubt it is for other students. For these two in particular, Victoria’s favourite subject is Business whilst Callum’s is PE.
So after their scary and exciting first days, it is good to hear that they are all settled into their new school, where new experiences and memories are still to come.
Special thanks to:
Ms Gordon, Ms Akiss, and Mr Healey for helping Victoria become comfortable and settle into Onslow. Also Mr Conway and Callum’s friend Kieran for helping and supporting him with the start of year 7.
