Arconic Challenge – UK Winners
Rebecca Jones – Year 12
Seven Year 12 students competed in a competition against local schools to propose a way of reducing carbon emissions by 2030 of up to 40% through urban mobility.
The students worked as a team to come up with an efficient plan to build a mono rail in the air with the main use (one of many) to reduce traffic congestion.
The students were judged from Engineers who worked for Arconic (an engineering and materials company) based on many factors such as cost, efficiency, material recyclability and creativity.
Not only did the students from Onslow St Audrey’s win the local challenge but were also named winners of the overall National Challenge. They won the chance to show off their design to European judges from France, Germany and Hungary via a Skype call.
The students narrowly missed out on winning the European Challenge, however did take home the title of UK champions!
A massive thank you to Mr Hajilambi and Mr Spooner for offering lots of support to the students, Mrs Manley for giving the students a chance to take part in the competition, Arconic and their Engineers for Mentoring and working with us throughout the two days and the students who took part and represented the school.
