Work shadowing encourages students to appreciate the distance people travel to work, the inter relationships formed in a business environment, the variety of skills that a job requires and how technology is applied.
Barnabas Szabo reports:
I spent the day work shadowing my father at the Subway outlet located in the Forum building at the University of Hertfordshire. I observed my father’s work from 12.30pm – 8.30pm. It was a very busy day as there was an event on at the University campus. The event enabled me to see how people worked under pressure and as part of a team. The most interesting aspect of the day for me was carrying out an interview with a Team Leader. I have never been in an interview scenario before, so I was very excited about it. The five key learning points I have witnessed from my Work Shadowing Day are:
1. Serve the customer – number one priority
2. Careful handling of all food and drinks
3. Till operative
4. Ensure stock is available and kept in the fridges at all times
5. The importance of teamwork and the effective communication that is required in the workplace.
